Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival 2024

September 13th - 15th

Join us for a weekend of tradition, fun, and flavour as Whitstable honours its historic and cultural connection with oysters. For three days, the mighty mollusc takes centre stage. From the iconic Landing of the Oysters Ceremony to the thrilling Mud Tug and the legendary Oyster Eating Competition, there’s something for everyone at the Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival!

Celebrating a Legacy: Whitstable’s Oyster Heritage:

Whitstable’s oyster festival traditions stretch back to the Roman Empire, when Julius Caesar’s soldiers developed a taste for Kentish oysters. The town’s oyster heritage was further celebrated in Norman times, with fishermen feasting in the name of St. James of Compostela, the unofficial patron saint of oysters. The modern festival, revived in the 1980s, continues this legacy, celebrating with feasting, games, and competitions much like the Holy Day of old. Whitstable has long been a prominent coastal town for oyster catching and eating, and this festival is a testament to that enduring heritage.
